Get Involved

The Unit believes that community action does make a difference, it does influence governments and corporations to modify their behaviours. A handful of examples of the positive things that have happened in areas where the Unit has been involved in campaigning, usually as part of a larger campaign, include:
  • In September 2005 the Australian Government agreed to increase overseas aid by $1.5 billion to a total of $4 billion by 2010.
  • The Australian Government has allowed asylum seeker families to be release into the community while their claims for asylum are sorted out.
  • The Australian Government eased its regime of cutting payments to unemployed people that do not meet a range of 'activity tests'. The cuts push many unemployed people further into poverty.
  • The Victorian Government banned pokies advertising and has banned smoking in pokie venues by 2007.
  • The Unit has seen Christian prisoners of conscience it has campaigned for released from imprisonment in Pakistan, Vietnam and Indonesia.
