Convention 2009
Convention 2009
The theme for the 2009 JIM Convention is 'The Cost of
Compassion', and you can find the poster and the registration form on
the right side of the page.
Keynote Speaker: Pastor Berlin Guerrero from the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, and former prisoner of conscience.
The pursuit of Gospel inspired social justice can come at a heavy cost to those involved. It might also mean we have to be willing to give up part of what might be a comfortable lifestyle.
The Convention will consider how we can actively support those involved
in ‘taking up their cross’ for Gospel based social justice and what
cost we might have to take up ourselves in the pursuit of the coming
kingdom of God.
Workshops will consider issues including:
- Christians being targeted by Hindu nationalist extremists in North India;
- Paying to protect the planet - Should the coal companies or householders be paying to stop climate change? What can we do now the 5% reduction target has been set? Who will pay under the emis sions trading scheme?;
- Caught in the Crossfire – the price Christians have been willing to pay in seeking peace and justice in the Israel-Palestine conflict;
- The unpopular cause in our midst - the challenge of prison reform;
- The cost of challenging callous capitalism – the cost paid by those around the globe who have challenged multinational giant Nestlé; and
- Paying the ultimate price – the cost to Christians seeking social justice in the Philippines.
The Convention will seek input from participants on Synod recommendations for the 2010 Synod and the work areas of the Justice and International Mission Unit.
