SUMMARY:The Future of Christian Doctrine
DESCRIPTION:“Doctrines are produced over time as social constructions in the terms available in any historical and cultural context and also as a catalyst to social construction. Doctrine is always both the product and producer of social construction\, the shaper and the shaped.” \nChristine Helmer (2014) \n“Believers should certainly learn that to belong to a living tradition is to be forbidden to look to the past too credulously\, seeking unmistakable evidence of indubitable “facts” of doctrine…   [T]he faithful believer is willing to look to the future with the intention of better understanding\, and\, if necessary\, remedying the past. And there is no saying what new configurations of meaning …this may allow to come into being.” \nDavid Bentley Hart (2022) \n  \nTwo-day workshop: Friday August 18th 10am – 4.30pm and Friday September 1st\, 10am – 4.30pm \nLed by Associated Professor Geoff Thompson\, Pilgrim Theological College \n  \nFreed from the shadow cast by dogmatism\, the contemporary study of Christian doctrine is lively\, operating on multiple fronts\, and unpredictable. This workshop will explore doctrines not as impositions but as invitations to explore\, critique\, proclaim and reform. \n  \nDay 1: \n\nOverview of contemporary discussions\, introducing ideas of Willie James Jennings\, Christian Helmer\, Mike Higton\, David Bentley Hart\, Anne M. Carpenter\nDoctrine\, Performance and Queer Theory  (presented by Rev Liam Miller\, PhD student\, Charles Sturt University)\n\nDay 2: \n\nCase Study 1: Unlocking the doctrine of providence from colonial ideologies\n\n\nCase Study 2: Sex\, Gender and the doctrine of imago dei\n\n\nDoctrine\, Theology and Wisdom in the Uniting Church\n\n  \nIn person cost: $80 (incl. morning tea and lunch) \nOnline cost: $30 \nStudent discount: 50% \n  \nTo register\, click here \n

SUMMARY:Kairos – Perfect Timing
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition\, Aug 21 – Sept 8\, 2023 \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nArtists Dawn Csutoros\, Akiko Nagino\, Pamela Rataj and Taka Sugawara \nnavigate the spirituality of true focus\, with works that are process oriented\, allowing time to slow down. For these artists\, artmaking becomes an active meditation\, whether through intricate patterns\, or paired down forms. By focusing on surfaces and patterns inspired by nature\, the artists evoke an affinity between living things and deep layers of time. These works echo timelessness\, transition and a sense of time which cannot be measured\, only experienced. \n  \nhttps://www.toorakuc.org.au/kinross-exhibitions \n  \nOpening Event Thurs 24 Aug. 6 – 8 pm\, free. \nArtists in Conversation\, Thurs 31 Aug. 11 am. $10 \nRSVP required. \n  \nExhibition open Mon – Fri 10 am to 3 pm.
