SUMMARY:Art of Belief
DESCRIPTION:A unique Continuing Education opportunity from Pilgrim Theological College at the NGV: \nArt of Belief \nAR/CH 211oP-31\, 10P-9110P \nKatherine Massam and Howard Wallace \n(Classes Thursdays 1- 5pm on May 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, Sept 5\, 12 & Oct 17) \nDo you use art as a way of engaging your community/congregation in liturgy or preaching and teaching? Or would you like to use art more readily to enhance your church’s life and witness\, but are not confident in how to do this?  Art is a powerful medium through which to understand both our surrounding culture and the faith of the church\, and how those aspects relate to each other.  In this unit you will gain greater understanding of the impact European and Aboriginal traditions of art have had on Australian Christianity.  You will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the representation of selected key aspects of Christian belief\, by drawing specifically on the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria – in dialogue with other images.   The majority of class time will be at the Gallery itself. \nConsider enrolling (as full credit or audit) with a few colleagues\, and then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on developing your use of art in ministering with your congregation/community.  There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing Education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au

SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Missional Heart of the Church with Rev Dr Samuel Wells
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of the Church lies a call to mission\, to engage with the world. Dr Wells affirms the world as part of the kingdom\, the sphere of\nthe Spirit’s work beyond the Church. With the introduction of the welfare state\, the Church retreated from social engagement and “by concentrating on personal faith and spirituality\, the churches denied themselves the lifeblood that social engagement had long given them” (For Good: The Church and the Future of Welfare). \nWhere: Centre for Theology & Ministry\, 29 College Cres\, Parkville \nCost: $80\, includes lunch\, morning and afternoon tea. \nSchool of Ministry with Rev Dr Samuel Wells\nSamuel Wells is a preacher\, writer and theologian. He has served as Church of England parish priest in England for over 20 years\, often in places of social disadvantage. Dr Wells spent seven years as Dean of Duke University Chapel in the US. He has published 30 books\, including academic studies and textbooks in Christian ethics\, explorations of social mission\, liturgy and faith\, and four collections of sermons. \nHis most recent book is Incarnational Mission: Being with the World. \nDr Wells will help us to articulate a theological narrative about who we are as a missional church\, called to be with the world. \nThis will be a day of input from Dr Wells\, with a panel discussion and conversation about mission in your context. \nThe keynote address(es) will be recorded. \nRegister online \nDownload – Event flyer \nDownload – Aim and Schedule for the day

SUMMARY:**CANCELLED: Northey Lecture: “Prophet of God\, Son of God? Jesus in Islam and Christianity.”
DESCRIPTION:Both Christians and Muslims honour and revere Jesus\, but the two faiths differ on the status they give to him. For Christians Jesus is the Son of God. For Muslims he is a revered prophet. Nevertheless\, can Christians and Muslims still learn from each other about Jesus? This is a topic to be explored in the upcoming Northey Lecture jointly hosted by Pilgrim Theological College and Trinity College Theological School. The lecturer is Dr. Joshua Ralston\, a specialist in Christian-Muslim relations at the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. \nThis event is free\, but for organisational purposes please RSVP here. \nFurther details: 9340 8800\, info@ctm.uca.edu.au or 03 9348 7527\, events@trinity.unimelb.edu.au. \nTo download the event flyer\, click here. \n**UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions\, Dr. Ralston is now not coming to Australia. He has indicated that he hopes to reschedule his visit to Australia later in the year. If that occurs\, it is hoped that this lecture can also be rescheduled. If so\, details will be provided in due course.
