DESCRIPTION:Lecture topic: Church in Ordinary Time: A Wisdom Ecclesiology \nSpeaker: Professor Amy Platinga Pauw\, Louisville Presbyterian Seminary \nTime/date: 7.30pm\, Thursday July 18th \nLocation: Brunswick Uniting Church\, 214 Sydney Road\, Brunswick (cnr Sydney Road and Merri Street). The lecture will also be livestreamed via YouTube\, https://www.youtube.com/@brunswickunitingchurch4303 \nAbout the Lecture: The doctrine of creation has been missing in most theological accounts of the church. That has made it harder for Christians to make common cause with others in a religiously pluralistic world and to address the ecological threat we all face as creatures. I propose a wisdom ecclesiology that takes the doctrine of creation seriously in thinking about the church. \nAbout the Lecturer: Amy Plantinga Pauw is the Henry P. Mobley Professor of Doctrinal Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville\, Kentucky\, USA. She has written widely in Reformed theology and with Serene Jones she editor she is the editor of Feminist and Womanist Essays in Reformed Dogmatics. She is also the general editor of the Belief series\, a 36-volume theological commentary on scripture published by Westminster John Knox Press\, and is the author of the volume on Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. Her book on ecclesiology\, Church in Ordinary Time: Wisdom Ecclesiology offers a novel appeal to feminist\, wisdom\, liturgical and classical theologies to re-frame how we think about the church and its engagement with the world. SUMMARY:Northey Lecture: Bearing Witness – an approach to Christian-Muslim Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first lecture in the 2024 Northey Lecture series\, co-hosted with Trinity College Theological School as the Hughes-Cheong public lecture\, to be presented by Dr Joshua Ralston\, Reader in Christian-Muslim Relations at the School of Divinity\, University of Edinburgh and visiting scholar at Trinity College Theological School. \nBearing Witness: An Approach to Christian-Muslim Dialogue discusses how two assumptions dominate approaches to Christian-Muslim theological dialogue. First\, theological differences over God\, Jesus\, and Muhammad are viewed as the main problem facing Christian-Muslim relations. Based on this claim\, the chief aim of interfaith dialogue becomes addressing the problem of difference through seeking out areas of commonality and theological consensus. This paper challenges both assumptions by presenting a vision of Christian theological engagement with Islamic thought where the primary aim is not agreement\, but mutual learning through non-apologetic witness\, honest contestation\, and theological clarification. DESCRIPTION:Rev Dr Kylie Crabbe is our guest for Thinking Theologically About… on February 29th. Kylie is a UCA minister and Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Catholic University. Her area of speciality is biblical studies\, and area of interest and current research is the way we understand disability in the scriptures. Accordingly\, Kylie’s topic with us will be:  ‘Biblical Disability and Its Discontents: Exploring Faithful Readings for the Whole People of God. \nKylie’s sessions will give the opportunity to Think Theologically about biblical texts that explicitly relate to disability\, with some resources also from disability theology and other recent work from the disability sector. These questions take us beyond what it means to be an “inclusive” church\, to what we imagine the church itself even is and our shared experiences of human limitation. There’ll also be the chance to share some handy resources in development for those who use the bible in worship and pastoral care\, including on the history of interpretation (in art\, music\, literature\, early Church sermons\, etc) of biblical passages about disability. This “biblical reception” is another way of illuminating aspects of our own readings and assumptions. \n  \nCome along to the Centre for Theology and Ministry at 10.30 am. DESCRIPTION:Chaplaincy – A Very Different Ministry: Transition to Chaplaincy Course \n  \nEverything you wanted to know about chaplaincy but were afraid to ask! \n  \nThis short course is designed for those considering a shift from congregational ministry into chaplaincy\, and for those considering chaplaincy as a lay ministry. All are welcome. \n  \nChaplaincy is very different from congregational placements. In this course we propose to unpack myths and misunderstandings about what it involves\, and offer accurate information to help you discern whether it’s a ministry for you. Bronwyn Pike\, Chair of Uniting\, will launch For I Was Hungry: Congregations and Church Agencies in Relationship\, edited by John G. Flett\, Professor of Contextual Theology at Pilgrim Theological College\, University of Divinity. Copies will be available for purchase from Uniting Academic Press. \nThis is a significant book for the on-going life and structure of the Uniting Church and brings together an distinguished team of contributors. \nThe Basis of Union – the foundational document of the Uniting Church in Australia – clearly prioritises the congregation as the ’embodiment of the church’ yet also assumes the need for agencies to carry out the work and mission of the church beyond congregations. When the Basis was being devised\, congregations were strong and vibrant\, the voice of the church carried authority in the community\, senior staff in the church’s agencies – education\, finance\, hospitals and other caring establishments – were assumed to share and promote the faith convictions of the church. \nTimes have changed; and this collection of informed essays explores the consequences of changes in church and society\, the growing dependence of agencies on government funding\, issues of compliance\, competencies\, responsibilities. DESCRIPTION:Welcoming and Inclusive: Actions for Churches in response to people with disabilities and mental health issues \n  \nWhen: Saturday 29 July 2023\, 9:15 am – 5 pm \nWhere: Salvation Army Centre\, 1010 Whitehorse Road\, Box Hill or Online \nCost: $40 for Metropolitan participants/ $25 concession and non-Metropolitan participants/ $10 online participants. Catering provided. \nBoth Federal and Victorian Governments have been part of significant reforms in relation to mental health and disability. Most significant has been the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. However\, despite these reforms\, too many people with disabilities and mental health needs still face abuse\, neglect\, exploitation and discrimination. These issues have been highlighted by numerous Parliamentary inquiries and the Royal Commission into Violence\, Abuse\, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. \nTheological response to people with disabilities and mental health issues have also shifted\, becoming more aware of the impact of our theology and language on Christian perspectives and responses to disability. Many churches have also made efforts to be welcoming and inclusive. At the same time\, people with disabilities and mental health issues still struggle to find churches that make them feel welcome and fully included. \nThe conference will provide opportunities to explore how congregations can be more welcoming and inclusive of people with disabilities and mental health issues. Together we will also explore the ways in which churches can be part of advocacy for further reforms by governments. \n  \nKey Speakers \n  \n \nRev Dr Andy Calder \nDisability Inclusion Advocate \nUniting Church in Australia\, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania \nAndy has previously held roles as chaplain at Prahran Mission\, and senior chaplain at Epworth HealthCare\, Richmond. \nPrior to ordination in 1995 as a Uniting Church deacon\, Andy worked in a range of community and government contexts in program delivery\, policy development and advocacy with people with disabilities. \nAndy is committed to ensuring people with disabilities are full and equal participants in all activities of the Synod. His PhD explored the spirituality of adults with an intellectual disability. \nAndy is also Director of the Uniting CPE – the John Paver Centre\, a Clinical Pastoral Education provider. \n  \n \nColleen Pearce \nPublic Advocvate \nDr Colleen Pearce has been Victoria’s Public Advocate since September 2007. \nIn this role\, she is the guardian of last resort for adults with disabilities in Victoria. Under legislation\, she is also chair of the Community Visitor boards. \nColleen fearlessly advocates for the human rights and interests of people with a disability and a mental illness\, and is outspoken on the significant issues of abuse\, neglect and exploitation. \nColleen has more than 30 years’ experience managing community and health services in both the government and non-government sectors. \nShe is a board member of Connecting Home\, an organisation established in response to the recommendations arising from the Stolen Generations Taskforce Report. \nColleen is a proud Yuin woman from southern NSW. \n  \n  \nPanellists \n  \n \nMajor Christine Pickens \nMajor Christine Pickens has been a Salvation Army Officer for over 32 years in a variety of ministries in corps and social work. Over the last 16 years\, the focus of her work has been in the Emergency Relief sector and in delivering training. \nChristine is part of Eva Burrows College Vocational Training Stream and delivers a variety of different accredited and non-accredited training programs and is responsible for Positive Lifestyle Program Trainers across Australia. \n  \n  \n \nRev Amanda Nicholas \nComing from her own lived experiences and passion for creating a genuinely educated and meaningful faith encounter\, Amanda is passionate about educating and resourcing individuals and communities of faith in accessible and inclusive liturgies and practices within the dynamics of the Body of Christ seeking to be known as inclusive communities across the expanse of culture\, gender\, sexuality\, neurodiversity and more. \n  \n \nZak Hanyn \nZak is of proud Moroccan descent\, who lives in Naarm and works on the lands of the Wurundjeri people. He has had a long and complex journey of moments of joy and great loss due multiple chronic medical conditions.
