SUMMARY:Kairos – Perfect Timing
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition\, Aug 21 – Sept 8\, 2023 \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \nArtists Dawn Csutoros\, Akiko Nagino\, Pamela Rataj and Taka Sugawara \nnavigate the spirituality of true focus\, with works that are process oriented\, allowing time to slow down. For these artists\, artmaking becomes an active meditation\, whether through intricate patterns\, or paired down forms. By focusing on surfaces and patterns inspired by nature\, the artists evoke an affinity between living things and deep layers of time. These works echo timelessness\, transition and a sense of time which cannot be measured\, only experienced. \n  \nhttps://www.toorakuc.org.au/kinross-exhibitions \n  \nOpening Event Thurs 24 Aug. 6 – 8 pm\, free. \nArtists in Conversation\, Thurs 31 Aug. 11 am. $10 \nRSVP required. \n  \nExhibition open Mon – Fri 10 am to 3 pm. SUMMARY:The Future of Christian Doctrine
DESCRIPTION:“Doctrines are produced over time as social constructions in the terms available in any historical and cultural context and also as a catalyst to social construction. Doctrine is always both the product and producer of social construction\, the shaper and the shaped.” \nChristine Helmer (2014) \n“Believers should certainly learn that to belong to a living tradition is to be forbidden to look to the past too credulously\, seeking unmistakable evidence of indubitable “facts” of doctrine…   [T]he faithful believer is willing to look to the future with the intention of better understanding\, and\, if necessary\, remedying the past. And there is no saying what new configurations of meaning …this may allow to come into being.” \nDavid Bentley Hart (2022) \n  \nTwo-day workshop: Friday August 18th 10am – 4.30pm and Friday September 1st\, 10am – 4.30pm \nLed by Associated Professor Geoff Thompson\, Pilgrim Theological College \n  \nFreed from the shadow cast by dogmatism\, the contemporary study of Christian doctrine is lively\, operating on multiple fronts\, and unpredictable. This workshop will explore doctrines not as impositions but as invitations to explore\, critique\, proclaim and reform. \n  \nDay 1: \n\nOverview of contemporary discussions\, introducing ideas of Willie James Jennings\, Christian Helmer\, Mike Higton\, David Bentley Hart\, Anne M. Carpenter\nDoctrine\, Performance and Queer Theory  (presented by Rev Liam Miller\, PhD student\, Charles Sturt University)\n\nDay 2: \n\nCase Study 1: Unlocking the doctrine of providence from colonial ideologies\n\n\nCase Study 2: Sex\, Gender and the doctrine of imago dei\n\n\nDoctrine\, Theology and Wisdom in the Uniting Church\n\n  \nIn person cost: $80 (incl. morning tea and lunch) \nOnline cost: $30 \nStudent discount: 50% \n  \nTo register\, click here \n

SUMMARY:For I Was Hungry - book launch
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to join us on Monday 31 July when the Hon. Bronwyn Pike\, Chair of Uniting\, will launch For I Was Hungry: Congregations and Church Agencies in Relationship\, edited by John G. Flett\, Professor of Contextual Theology at Pilgrim Theological College\, University of Divinity. Copies will be available for purchase from Uniting Academic Press. \nThis is a significant book for the on-going life and structure of the Uniting Church and brings together an distinguished team of contributors. \nThe Basis of Union – the foundational document of the Uniting Church in Australia – clearly prioritises the congregation as the ’embodiment of the church’ yet also assumes the need for agencies to carry out the work and mission of the church beyond congregations. When the Basis was being devised\, congregations were strong and vibrant\, the voice of the church carried authority in the community\, senior staff in the church’s agencies – education\, finance\, hospitals and other caring establishments – were assumed to share and promote the faith convictions of the church. \nTimes have changed; and this collection of informed essays explores the consequences of changes in church and society\, the growing dependence of agencies on government funding\, issues of compliance\, competencies\, responsibilities. The key concern of For I was hungry is a division between congregations and agencies – both imposed and perceived – and asks sometimes uncomfortable questions about mission and witness\, ownership and connections\, oversight and responsibility\, secularisation and the serious decline in local membership. \nAll welcome but registration essential for catering please. \nTime: 3.30 – 5.00pm \nDate: Monday 31 July 2023 \nLocation: Yagilaith\, Pilgrim Theological College\, 29 College Crescent\, Parkville VIC 3052 and online via Zoom (Zoom link will be emailed at 1pm on the day of the event) \n  \nTo register\, click here

SUMMARY:Welcoming and Inclusive: Actions for Churches in response to people with disabilities and health issues
DESCRIPTION:Welcoming and Inclusive: Actions for Churches in response to people with disabilities and mental health issues \n  \nWhen: Saturday 29 July 2023\, 9:15 am – 5 pm \nWhere: Salvation Army Centre\, 1010 Whitehorse Road\, Box Hill or Online \nCost: $40 for Metropolitan participants/ $25 concession and non-Metropolitan participants/ $10 online participants. Catering provided. \nBoth Federal and Victorian Governments have been part of significant reforms in relation to mental health and disability. Most significant has been the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. However\, despite these reforms\, too many people with disabilities and mental health needs still face abuse\, neglect\, exploitation and discrimination. These issues have been highlighted by numerous Parliamentary inquiries and the Royal Commission into Violence\, Abuse\, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. \nTheological response to people with disabilities and mental health issues have also shifted\, becoming more aware of the impact of our theology and language on Christian perspectives and responses to disability. Many churches have also made efforts to be welcoming and inclusive. At the same time\, people with disabilities and mental health issues still struggle to find churches that make them feel welcome and fully included. \nThe conference will provide opportunities to explore how congregations can be more welcoming and inclusive of people with disabilities and mental health issues. SUMMARY:Douglas and Whitaker - Book launch
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to join us for a joint book launch for Jesus Sophia: Returning to Woman Wisdom in the Bible\, Practice\, and Prayer by Sally Douglas and Even the DevilQuotes Scripture: Reading the Bible on Its Own Terms by Robyn Whitaker. \n  \nAssociate Professor Monica Melanchthon will launch Jesus Sophia: Returning to Woman Wisdom in the Bible\, Practice\, and Prayer by Sally Douglas. \n \nJesus Sophia explores the overlapping theological themes that Jesus and Sophia share within the bible. Questions about biblical interpretation\, theology\, and faithful practice are investigated in relation to themes including divine hospitality\, friendship\, anger\, and care for the earth. \n“With deftness\, honesty\, and tenderness\, and with the clarity and depth of a scholar\, Sally Douglas invites us to discover and experience for ourselves the ancient\, neglected traditions of Jesus Sophia. In this engaging book\, she guides the reader to welcome Woman Wisdom into the language of their soul and to find new ways of participating in the divine life of Holy Wisdom.” \n—Vicky Balabanski\, Principal\, Uniting College for Leadership & Theology \n“I was comforted\, unsettled\, challenged\, and sustained by this beautifully written and well-researched book. I was drawn into prayer\, reflected on how Jesus as Woman Wisdom guides how I live\, and found myself reaching for my Bible to read it with new eyes. This book will nourish the curious and committed alike\, inviting all to gather at the table of Jesus the meal-maker and find life.” \n—Sharon Hollis\, President\, Uniting Church in Australia \nhttps://wipfandstock.com/9781666735796/jesus-sophia/ \n  \nProfessor Peter Sherlock will launch Even the Devil Quotes Scripture: Reading the Bible on Its Own Terms by Robyn Whitaker. \n \nEven the Devil Quotes Scripture looks to the Bible as a guide to interpreting the Bible\, and her findings breathe new life into our understanding and use of Scripture. Ultimately\, Whitaker proposes a hermeneutic of love—a litmus test for the validity of a scriptural interpretation measured in charity. \n“Whitaker’s lucid and highly personal book urges the read to let the Bible be what it is rather than force it into preconceived categories and to keep in mind that the goal of interpretation is love. This engaging book should be read by any student embarking on the study of the Bible\, especially those who come from a conservative background and are anxious about the effects of critical scholarship.” \n—John J. Collins\, Professor of Hebrew Bible\, Yale University \n“This unique book integrates Whitaker’s impressive academic expertise with everyday matters of faith and applies both to reading the Bible and to discerning how God continues to speak to God’s people through this living\, dynamic sacred text. Whitaker challenges the ways the Bible is used to condemn and exclude and advocates replacing such use with a hermeneutic of love\, inviting readers deeper into conversation with God and following the example of Jesus. This book is a gift and excellent resource for the academy\, the church\, and\, in Whitaker’s words\, ‘those hovering around her edges’.” \n—Jenn Strawbridge\, Associate Professor of NT\, Oxford University \nhttps://www.eerdmans.com/Products/8203/even-the-devil-quotes-scripture.aspx \n  \n**We look forward to seeing you at the book launch on Thursday 18th  May. Sally and Robyn will both have a few copies of their books for sale at $30 each. Please bring cash if you would like to purchase a book. \n  \nDate: Thursday 18 May \nTime: 5.00pm – 6.30pm \nLocation: Centre for Theology and Ministry\, 29 College Crescent\, Parkville VIC 3052 \nCost: Free \n  \nTo register\, click here \nRegistrations close Monday 15 May \n  \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reflective Practice for Intercultural Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the cultures of those we serve requires more than words and good intentions. \nThe journey towards cultural competence requires the willingness to learn from ones experiences and act. \nThere is much that Ministry leaders need to learn about those whom we serve. Understanding the culture and history of the people especially of those who do not belong to your culture is essential to minister to them. One of the most valuable skills we can have is cultural competence-the ability to work across cultures in a way that acknowledges and respects the culture of the person being served. People bring with them both their theologically formed faith and their culturally formed faith practices and piety. \nThis workshop seeks to offer resources in reflective practice for those wanting to minister cross culturally and inter culturally. \n  \nTo register\, click here \n  \n  \n
