SUMMARY:Seminar - Theology as Story: Believing in the Truth of People
DESCRIPTION:In realms of religion\, the word “belief” is often used. What do you believe? Do you agree with this belief? Or that belief? Do you think what\nyou believe is true? This seminar\, led by Pádraig Ó Tuama\, will move the focus of belief away from what we believe to who we believe. Focusing on a central question of “tell us a time when you were believed” we will uncover the power of belief when it’s enacted as a reciprocal and life-giving gesture\, especially when it is least expected. \nFor: Storytellers\, artists\, poets\, writers and those who lead congregations in ministry and mission. \nWine and nibbles will be available from 6.30pm. \nPádraig Ó Tuama\nPádraig is a peacemaker\, poet/prophet and artist/theologian. He writes poems\, prose and prayers\, and has led writing workshops and art retreats. He has also been artist in residence at Synod meetings. \nPádraig leads the Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland and is committed to the healing of social\, religious and political divisions that exist in Northern Ireland and throughout the world. \n“Pádraig Ó Tuama is an extraordinary person\, whose influence extends quietly and gracefully across the world. His poetry bears these same qualities and brings him close. It is a gift to us all.” – Krista Tippett (Creator and host of ‘On Being’) \nFor full bibliography go to: https://bit.ly/2UVeEcT \nREGISTRATION:\nStorywork special combined price: Seminar and Storywork\n$120 full price (waged)\n$90 (part-waged\, part-time students\, seniors card) $75 (full-time students\, pension card holders) \nSeminar only:\n$15 waged\n$10 concession (students\, pension card\, part-time workers) \nStorywork only:\n$110 waged\n$70 concession (students\, pension card\, part-time workers) \nEnquiries:\nChristina Rowntree\, Theology and the Arts Ministry\, P: 9340 8813\, E: chris.rowntree@victas.uca.org.au or contact Ann Byrne for help with registration at ann.byrne@victas.uca.org.au or 9340 8815 \nPlease register online at https://www.trybooking.com/BBOWW \nDownload event flyer \n  \nSee the connected event: Storywork: A full day workshop for storytellers

SUMMARY:Storywork: A full day workshop for storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Everywhere we are surrounded by story. Someone will say “You’ll never guess what happened me on the tram today”\, or “I can’t believe my boss is such an idiot”. Behind every statement lies a story\, and behind every story lies another story. This session\, led by Pádraig Ó Tuama\, will use narrative technique to bring stories out in the gathered room\, and share narrative techniques for use in congregational and community groups. \nThe Gospels as Story: Wandering through the Narrative Pathways of the Gospels. \nIf you were to tell the gospel as story\, where would you start? Whose voice would you use? What techniques would you employ for drama\, tension\, pain and insight? Which characters would you present sympathetically? How would you distinguish your use of narration? What would you imagine about your audiences\, and what would you hope your work in telling would achieve? \nThe four gospels are\, ultimately\, works of literature. Each has a particular style and the gospel writers craft their characters (Jesus\, Pharisees\, anonymous people) with distinction. This session will explore some of the literary and artistic particularities of the sketches of Jesus — and others — in the four gospels. \nMorning and afternoon tea with healthy snacks will be provided. \nPlan to arrive at 9.30am to settle in\, have a cuppa and meet other participants. \nWhat to bring: \n\nJournal and pens\nPacked lunch or purchase nearby. Fridge and microwave available.\n\nPádraig Ó Tuama\nPádraig is a peacemaker\, poet/prophet and artist/theologian. SUMMARY:Liturgy Lab with Stephen Burns
DESCRIPTION:SEMESTER 2 INTENSIVE: JULY 19\, 20\, 21 & 22.\nA wonderful Continuing Education opportunity from PILGRIM THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE\nCourse code: DL2400P-DL9400P \nHave you spent time recently reflecting theologically on your community’s liturgical life? Would you like outside input to deepen your approach to liturgy in the 2st Century church? In this unit you will explore kinaesthetic and other arts used in worship\, and reflect on the pastoral\, public and representative vocation of the one who presides. \nThis unit will expose you to insights from ecumenical liturgical renewal and liturgical theology as these relate to the missional vocation of the church. Special attention is given to Anglican and Uniting contexts of worship\, and a significant portion of the unit will be given to embodied and enacted liturgical practice. \nConsider enrolling (as a full credit or audit student) with a few colleagues\, then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on exploring\, in an ongoing way\, your liturgical practice in the light of the insights from the unit. There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. https://ctm.uca.edu.au/resources/funding-scholarships/ \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au. \nTo enrol in this unit\, please contact the Registrar of Pilgrim Theological College\, Erlinda Loverseed: Erlinda.loverseed@pilgrim.edu.au \nDownload the event flyer \n  \nImage: www.JohnAugustSwanson.com – copyright 1997 by John August Swanson

Dr Wells affirms the world as part of the kingdom\, the sphere of\nthe Spirit’s work beyond the Church. With the introduction of the welfare state\, the Church retreated from social engagement and “by concentrating on personal faith and spirituality\, the churches denied themselves the lifeblood that social engagement had long given them” (For Good: The Church and the Future of Welfare). \nWhere: Centre for Theology & Ministry\, 29 College Cres\, Parkville \nCost: $80\, includes lunch\, morning and afternoon tea. \nSchool of Ministry with Rev Dr Samuel Wells\nSamuel Wells is a preacher\, writer and theologian. He has served as Church of England parish priest in England for over 20 years\, often in places of social disadvantage. Dr Wells spent seven years as Dean of Duke University Chapel in the US. He is currently priest at St Martin-in-the Fields\, London\, and visiting Professor of Christian Ethics at King’s College London. He has published 30 books\, including academic studies and textbooks in Christian ethics\, explorations of social mission\, liturgy and faith\, and four collections of sermons. \nHis most recent book is Incarnational Mission: Being with the World. \nDr Wells will help us to articulate a theological narrative about who we are as a missional church\, called to be with the world. \nThis will be a day of input from Dr Wells\, with a panel discussion and conversation about mission in your context. \nThe keynote address(es) will be recorded. \nRegister online \nDownload – Event flyer \nDownload – Aim and Schedule for the day

SUMMARY:Thriving Ministry Leadership: lessons from a duck\, an echidna and a tree (Tasmania - South)
DESCRIPTION:Andrew McDonough\, best known as the author and illustrator of the Lost Sheep books\, is coming to Tasmania! According to Andrew…“Jesus’ best command ever is ‘look at the birds’. It’s where to start if you’re following Jesus. Now\, if you’re in ministry leadership\, we recommend you pay attention to all of God’s creatures. If people drive you bonkers\, if you’re exhausted from helping everyone\, if your last sermon was described as ‘nice’ and if the phrase ‘fruitful ministry’ fills you with determination and despair then join the duck\, an echidna\, a caterpillar\, a tree\, Andrew McDonough and other new ministry friends in a workshop that will be fun and possibly of some value.”  \nFocused on those in ministry leadership\, such as ministers\, deacons\, pastors\, chaplains\, lay preachers\, church council members  and those with specific responsibility for children\, young people and families\, these sessions will be immensely inspiring\, encouraging and practical. Andrew will also highlight his latest book – Jesus was a refugee. Watch out for more information as it comes to hand or e-mail anthea.maynard@victas.uca.org.au. \n  \n\nCost: $10 \nDuration: 3 hours \nBYO Lunch \n\nDownload the event flyer \nRegister online \n

SUMMARY:Art of Belief
DESCRIPTION:A unique Continuing Education opportunity from Pilgrim Theological College at the NGV: \nArt of Belief \nAR/CH 211oP-31\, 10P-9110P \nKatherine Massam and Howard Wallace \n(Classes Thursdays 1- 5pm on May 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, Sept 5\, 12 & Oct 17) \nDo you use art as a way of engaging your community/congregation in liturgy or preaching and teaching? Or would you like to use art more readily to enhance your church’s life and witness\, but are not confident in how to do this?  Art is a powerful medium through which to understand both our surrounding culture and the faith of the church\, and how those aspects relate to each other.  In this unit you will gain greater understanding of the impact European and Aboriginal traditions of art have had on Australian Christianity.  You will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the representation of selected key aspects of Christian belief\, by drawing specifically on the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria – in dialogue with other images.   The majority of class time will be at the Gallery itself. \nConsider enrolling (as full credit or audit) with a few colleagues\, and then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on developing your use of art in ministering with your congregation/community.  There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing Education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au

SUMMARY:Justice & International Mission Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:A Climate of Change: Tomorrow’s Moral Imperative Today\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUniting Church members have understood that preserving creation for future generations is an essential part of their faith. The Justice and International Mission Conference this year takes stock of where the Uniting Church can continue to make a difference on how Australia impacts on environmental issues\, including climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the world discovers climate change as a moral prerogative that cannot be delayed\, younger generations are taking to the streets\, as we’ve seen with the school-strike movement\, to stand for what they believe in. With climate change becoming widely recognised as today’s moral imperative\, we become obliged to ask where we stand as individuals\, members of our community and global citizens? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we respond to the threats facing the natural environment as Christians?\nHow do we find hope in our faith to take what actions we can?\nHow do we empower our communities to face the threat of climate change?\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us and be part of the conversation to inform the future direction of the Uniting Church’s social justice mission as we unpack the urgency of climate change we are all facing. \nThis conference will examine a broad range of environmental concerns facing our planet\, including displacement of people as a result of climate change\, ecotheology\, electric vehicles\, illegal logging\, renewable energy\, ethical investments\, and Indigenous youth perspectives on climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\nCost: $40 for metropolitan participants\n$30 concession and non-metropolitan participants \n\n\n\n\n\nDownload brochure \nRegister online \n

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry – Part 2: The Work of the Congregation
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry\nThe Work of the Congregation (FTM-C) offers you the opportunity to build on your own experience as you develop expertise in the specialised ministry of the Transitional Minister. \nFTM-C is the second part of FTM training. FTM-C builds on the work begun in the first class\, Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry: The Work of the Leader (FTM-L). You need to have completed FTM –L in order to enrol in FTM-C. \nThis is a five-day program designed to provide information and experiences that will be helpful to people who\nplan to function in a congregational leadership role especially during a time of clerical transition or other major transition time. \nAs the role of an Intentional Interim Minister (IIM) is extremely demanding\, to enter this specialist program recommendations from presbytery or synod staff\, or appropriate committee chairpersons are essential (see relevant application form and referee’s report on back of this page. \nExperience of at least two ministry placements is essential. This is a demanding one-week full-time program. The five-day program is followed by a supervised project. \nYou can enrol in this course and not participate in the assessment/fieldwork\, given the content is useful for anyone in ministry. \nHowever\, to be an accredited IIM you need to complete the more formal application process\, assessment and fieldwork. \nThe course emphasises the work of the congregation. The fundamental tasks of the congregation\, framed as Focus Points\, are to successfully navigate the transition period: \n► HERITAGE\nReviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed. \n► LEADERSHIP\nReviewing the member needs and its ways of organising and developing new and effective leadership. \n► MISSION\nDefining and redefining sense of purpose and direction. \n► CONNECTIONS\nDiscovering all the relationships a faith community builds outside of itself. \n► FUTURE\nDeveloping congregational and pastoral profiles. \nPhase 2 Fieldwork\nThis gives you the opportunity to use the skills and principles acquired in FTM-L and FTM-C in their own ministry settings. Fieldwork is supervised by a member of our training team or a trained and experienced IIM practitioner in your own Synod. The whole package of FTM-L\, FTM-C and Fieldwork may be taken for academic credit as an independent study unit in ministry or leadership at certain theological colleges. A possible avenue for assistance with costs is the Continuing Education Grant for ministers in placement \nClick here for Grants and Scholarships – Application \n\n\nApplication Forms\nIf\, at the conclusion of FTM-C\, you are seeking the Interim Ministry Network qualification for accreditation as an IIM\, please fill in the following application forms through these links: \nClick here for the FTM-C Application Form \nClick here for the FTM-C Referee’s Report \nWhen competed\, please email both forms (marked “confidential”) to the course lead trainer:\nParramatta Nepean Presbytery\nPresbytery Ministry Leader\nRev.
