SUMMARY:Art of Belief
DESCRIPTION:A unique Continuing Education opportunity from Pilgrim Theological College at the NGV: \nArt of Belief \nAR/CH 211oP-31\, 10P-9110P \nKatherine Massam and Howard Wallace \n(Classes Thursdays 1- 5pm on May 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, Sept 5\, 12 & Oct 17) \nDo you use art as a way of engaging your community/congregation in liturgy or preaching and teaching? Or would you like to use art more readily to enhance your church’s life and witness\, but are not confident in how to do this?  Art is a powerful medium through which to understand both our surrounding culture and the faith of the church\, and how those aspects relate to each other.  In this unit you will gain greater understanding of the impact European and Aboriginal traditions of art have had on Australian Christianity.  You will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the representation of selected key aspects of Christian belief\, by drawing specifically on the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria – in dialogue with other images.   The majority of class time will be at the Gallery itself. \nConsider enrolling (as full credit or audit) with a few colleagues\, and then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on developing your use of art in ministering with your congregation/community.  There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing Education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au

SUMMARY:Justice & International Mission Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:A Climate of Change: Tomorrow’s Moral Imperative Today\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUniting Church members have understood that preserving creation for future generations is an essential part of their faith. The Justice and International Mission Conference this year takes stock of where the Uniting Church can continue to make a difference on how Australia impacts on environmental issues\, including climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the world discovers climate change as a moral prerogative that cannot be delayed\, younger generations are taking to the streets\, as we’ve seen with the school-strike movement\, to stand for what they believe in. With climate change becoming widely recognised as today’s moral imperative\, we become obliged to ask where we stand as individuals\, members of our community and global citizens? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we respond to the threats facing the natural environment as Christians?\nHow do we find hope in our faith to take what actions we can?\nHow do we empower our communities to face the threat of climate change?\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us and be part of the conversation to inform the future direction of the Uniting Church’s social justice mission as we unpack the urgency of climate change we are all facing. \nThis conference will examine a broad range of environmental concerns facing our planet\, including displacement of people as a result of climate change\, ecotheology\, electric vehicles\, illegal logging\, renewable energy\, ethical investments\, and Indigenous youth perspectives on climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\nCost: $40 for metropolitan participants\n$30 concession and non-metropolitan participants \n\n\n\n\n\nDownload brochure \nRegister online \n

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry – Part 2: The Work of the Congregation
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry\nThe Work of the Congregation (FTM-C) offers you the opportunity to build on your own experience as you develop expertise in the specialised ministry of the Transitional Minister. \nFTM-C is the second part of FTM training. FTM-C builds on the work begun in the first class\, Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry: The Work of the Leader (FTM-L). You need to have completed FTM –L in order to enrol in FTM-C. \nThis is a five-day program designed to provide information and experiences that will be helpful to people who\nplan to function in a congregational leadership role especially during a time of clerical transition or other major transition time. \nAs the role of an Intentional Interim Minister (IIM) is extremely demanding\, to enter this specialist program recommendations from presbytery or synod staff\, or appropriate committee chairpersons are essential (see relevant application form and referee’s report on back of this page. \nExperience of at least two ministry placements is essential. This is a demanding one-week full-time program. The five-day program is followed by a supervised project. \nYou can enrol in this course and not participate in the assessment/fieldwork\, given the content is useful for anyone in ministry. \nHowever\, to be an accredited IIM you need to complete the more formal application process\, assessment and fieldwork. \nThe course emphasises the work of the congregation. The fundamental tasks of the congregation\, framed as Focus Points\, are to successfully navigate the transition period: \n► HERITAGE\nReviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed. \n► LEADERSHIP\nReviewing the member needs and its ways of organising and developing new and effective leadership. \n► MISSION\nDefining and redefining sense of purpose and direction. \n► CONNECTIONS\nDiscovering all the relationships a faith community builds outside of itself. \n► FUTURE\nDeveloping congregational and pastoral profiles. \nPhase 2 Fieldwork\nThis gives you the opportunity to use the skills and principles acquired in FTM-L and FTM-C in their own ministry settings. Fieldwork is supervised by a member of our training team or a trained and experienced IIM practitioner in your own Synod. The whole package of FTM-L\, FTM-C and Fieldwork may be taken for academic credit as an independent study unit in ministry or leadership at certain theological colleges. A possible avenue for assistance with costs is the Continuing Education Grant for ministers in placement \nClick here for Grants and Scholarships – Application \n\n\nApplication Forms\nIf\, at the conclusion of FTM-C\, you are seeking the Interim Ministry Network qualification for accreditation as an IIM\, please fill in the following application forms through these links: \nClick here for the FTM-C Application Form \nClick here for the FTM-C Referee’s Report \nWhen competed\, please email both forms (marked “confidential”) to the course lead trainer:\nParramatta Nepean Presbytery\nPresbytery Ministry Leader\nRev. Dr Robert McFarlane\nrob@pnpuca.org.au \n\n  \nCOST: $500 for metro\, $400 for non-metro.

SUMMARY:The Living People of God: Local\, Global and Mission
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn a lot more about the world church – especially if your congregation/community is cross-cultural. How do the challenges and joys of local church life compare with those in Asia and Africa? \nThis unit is a great opportunity to explore the radically diverse ways the Body of Christ expresses herself. \nAs part of this unit\, we look at the character and history of minority ancient Christian communities\, the 20th century emergence of churches in the global south\, and the post-Christendom realities faced by churches in lands marked by “Western culture”. We also explore the roots of the church in the ministry of risen Jesus Christ and the sending of the Spirit. Attention will be given to the classical marks of the church as well as to the particular marks noted by the Reformers. \nConsider enrolling (as a full or audit) student with a colleague or two and then forming a Peer Learning Group to reflect on your learnings in the light of ministry practice. There are Continuing Education grants to assist with auditing costs and to support a Peer Learning Group. \nFor more Peer Learning Group information\, contact Fran Barber at RevFran.Barber@victas.uca.org.au \nTo enrol\, contact Erlinda Loverseed\, Registrar of Pilgrim Theological College on (03) 9340 8892 or at erlinda.loverseed@pilgrim.edu.au \nThis unit runs every Tuesday morning of Semester One. \nTo download the unit flyer\, click here.

SUMMARY:Generate 2020
DESCRIPTION:Generate 2020 \n– An Intergenerational Resource Writing Workshop \nThe Why \nWhilst many people are doing great intergenerational stuff in their local contexts\, there is a dearth of intentionally intergenerational resources being made available for wider distribution. Hence\, this initiative to bring together people interested in addressing this gaping need. \nThe Vision \nA group of creative people gathered in the same space to work on the intergenerational projects that they are interested in. A creative an environment that fosters collaboration\, facilitates helpful feedback and actually leads to intergenerational resources that can be disseminated widely. \nThe Practicalities \nThe Workshop will be taking place at the Centre for Theology and Ministry (29 College Cres\, Parkville) from 10am to 4pm each day (February 28\, 29). Lunches\, morning teas and afternoon teas will be provided\, hence a nominal cost of $40 for the two days (though\, obviously\, people will need to pay for/arrange their own accommodation and other meals). \nThe Hope \nThat the shape of the event will be being significantly determined by the actual participants. That rather than coming with an expectation of input\, participants will be focused on the potential for output. That this will be the first of a series of such events. \nFor more information or to register please visit: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/generate-2020-tickets-93782707603

SUMMARY:**CANCELLED: Northey Lecture: “Prophet of God\, Son of God? Jesus in Islam and Christianity.”
DESCRIPTION:Both Christians and Muslims honour and revere Jesus\, but the two faiths differ on the status they give to him. For Christians Jesus is the Son of God. For Muslims he is a revered prophet. Nevertheless\, can Christians and Muslims still learn from each other about Jesus? This is a topic to be explored in the upcoming Northey Lecture jointly hosted by Pilgrim Theological College and Trinity College Theological School. The lecturer is Dr. Joshua Ralston\, a specialist in Christian-Muslim relations at the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. \nThis event is free\, but for organisational purposes please RSVP here. \nFurther details: 9340 8800\, info@ctm.uca.edu.au or 03 9348 7527\, events@trinity.unimelb.edu.au. \nTo download the event flyer\, click here. \n**UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions\, Dr. Ralston is now not coming to Australia. He has indicated that he hopes to reschedule his visit to Australia later in the year. If that occurs\, it is hoped that this lecture can also be rescheduled. If so\, details will be provided in due course.
