Moderator’s Lent and Easter Offering

THE 2020 LENTEN OFFERING IS CURRENTLY PAUSED.

After consultation with Synod’s Mission and Ministry committee, our Moderator, Rev Denise Liersch, has put this year’s Lenten Offering on pause.

“All three projects have one thing in common – they are all about connecting communities.  As we eventually come out of this Coronavirus crisis, projects such as these will be needed more than ever.

This is a time when ministry and mission are being reshaped.

We are already looking at new ways in which community building ministry can best be supported through and beyond the current crisis.” – Rev Denise Liersch (Moderator, Uniting Church in Australia Synod of VicTas)

Lent is the season of the church year when we take time to reflect on Jesus’s journey to the cross and what this means for us, and for all people.

This year, our Lenten Grants appeal is for three projects which all offer hope for renewal for those who will be supported by the projects.  Through these, we can help others to stand alongside an oppressed people, create hope, build community and belonging and restore creation.  Details of all three projects are below.

In past years we have mailed Lenten Appeal kits to all congregations. In line with the Synod’s strategy of sustainability, this year we will not be mailing kits.  Rather, you can find resources at the bottom of this page, which you can download, share or print.

Please consider supporting the Lenten Appeal and, in so doing, you will be participating in the Kingdom’s work of renewal, justice and hope.

METRO
GATHERING PLACE, BAYSWATER

This community space will be for people in Melbourne’s outer east who are living with mental illness or are socially isolated. Run by the Elm St Mission, a new outreach of the Bayswater Uniting Church in conjunction with the Yarra Yarra Mental Health Ministries, the project is responding to evidential need for people to have a place to connect, feel they belong and can be supported in their recovery. The space will provide a place to gather, engage in therapeutic activities, form new friendships and receive support.

RURAL
COMMUNITY SPACE, EAGLEHAWK

Each Tuesday, Eaglehawk Uniting Church provides fresh food and groceries to the local community as well as a space for tea/coffee, cake and conversation. It plans to upgrade its facilities to better care for the lonely and marginalised by creating a cosy, inviting community space, cafe style, that invites people to relax and linger, enjoy conversation and hospitality from church volunteers. Money is needed for tables, chairs, crockery, cutlery, etc.

COVENANTING
ARTS PROJECT, COWES

The For Love of Earth project will provide intercultural, intergenerational and environmental arts activities to engage community and inspire ecological awareness. With a strong focus on youth and First Peoples participation, activities will integrate music, art and eco-spirituality to explore fresh ways of living out the Gospel.  The project will be run by St John’s UC, Phillip Island.
