SUMMARY:Northey Lecture - Church in Ordinary Time: A Wisdom Ecclesiology
DESCRIPTION:Lecture topic: Church in Ordinary Time: A Wisdom Ecclesiology \nSpeaker: Professor Amy Platinga Pauw\, Louisville Presbyterian Seminary \nTime/date: 7.30pm\, Thursday July 18th \nLocation: Brunswick Uniting Church\, 214 Sydney Road\, Brunswick (cnr Sydney Road and Merri Street). The lecture will also be livestreamed via YouTube\, https://www.youtube.com/@brunswickunitingchurch4303 \nAbout the Lecture: The doctrine of creation has been missing in most theological accounts of the church. That has made it harder for Christians to make common cause with others in a religiously pluralistic world and to address the ecological threat we all face as creatures. I propose a wisdom ecclesiology that takes the doctrine of creation seriously in thinking about the church. \nAbout the Lecturer: Amy Plantinga Pauw is the Henry P. Mobley Professor of Doctrinal Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville\, Kentucky\, USA. She has written widely in Reformed theology and with Serene Jones she editor she is the editor of Feminist and Womanist Essays in Reformed Dogmatics. She is also the general editor of the Belief series\, a 36-volume theological commentary on scripture published by Westminster John Knox Press\, and is the author of the volume on Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. Her book on ecclesiology\, Church in Ordinary Time: Wisdom Ecclesiology offers a novel appeal to feminist\, wisdom\, liturgical and classical theologies to re-frame how we think about the church and its engagement with the world. She is currently working on a project on theological aesthetics. \n  \nTo register\, click here \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Future of Christian Doctrine
DESCRIPTION:“Doctrines are produced over time as social constructions in the terms available in any historical and cultural context and also as a catalyst to social construction. Doctrine is always both the product and producer of social construction\, the shaper and the shaped.” \nChristine Helmer (2014) \n“Believers should certainly learn that to belong to a living tradition is to be forbidden to look to the past too credulously\, seeking unmistakable evidence of indubitable “facts” of doctrine…   [T]he faithful believer is willing to look to the future with the intention of better understanding\, and\, if necessary\, remedying the past. And there is no saying what new configurations of meaning …this may allow to come into being.” \nDavid Bentley Hart (2022) \n  \nTwo-day workshop: Friday August 18th 10am – 4.30pm and Friday September 1st\, 10am – 4.30pm \nLed by Associated Professor Geoff Thompson\, Pilgrim Theological College \n  \nFreed from the shadow cast by dogmatism\, the contemporary study of Christian doctrine is lively\, operating on multiple fronts\, and unpredictable. This workshop will explore doctrines not as impositions but as invitations to explore\, critique\, proclaim and reform. \n  \nDay 1: \n\nOverview of contemporary discussions\, introducing ideas of Willie James Jennings\, Christian Helmer\, Mike Higton\, David Bentley Hart\, Anne M. Carpenter\nDoctrine\, Performance and Queer Theory  (presented by Rev Liam Miller\, PhD student\, Charles Sturt University)\n\nDay 2: \n\nCase Study 1: Unlocking the doctrine of providence from colonial ideologies\n\n\nCase Study 2: Sex\, Gender and the doctrine of imago dei\n\n\nDoctrine\, Theology and Wisdom in the Uniting Church\n\n  \nIn person cost: $80 (incl. morning tea and lunch) \nOnline cost: $30 \nStudent discount: 50% \n  \nTo register\, click here \n

SUMMARY:Talking theologically about... work... and public theology
DESCRIPTION:This is the second of a series of gatherings aimed at expanding opportunities for informal theological conversations amongst UCA ministers. \nOn this occasion there will be two themes. Rev Brendan Byrne will kick of a conversation about work. Rev Fran Barber will introduce us to some of her learnings from the recent Pilgrim unit on public theology. \nJudging from our first gathering\, this will be an excellent opportunity for lively and stimulating conversation. \nThe gathering will be both face-to-face and online via Zoom. The Zoom details will be sent on the morning of the event to all who registered to attend online. \nFor those who wish to continue the conversation\, plan to stay on and have lunch at Sage and Grace. No reservation is required. \n  \nTo register\, click here

SUMMARY:Talking theologically about... preaching
DESCRIPTION:The idea of this gathering emerged from some informal musings amongst UCA ministers about expanding the opportunities for theological conversations. It is hoped that this will be the first of several similar events. \nOn this occasion\, the theme will be preaching\, with conversation-starter presentations from Rev Dr Craig Thompson and Rev Assoc Prof Robyn Whitaker. \nBeginning with the observation\, attributed to Stravinski\, that “Vivaldi did not write 400 concertos; he wrote once concerto 400 times\,” Craig will explore whether there is something constant about preaching when everything else is changing. \nWith reference to the legacy of Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse woodcuts on the reception of the book of Revelation\, Robyn will address how preaching engages popular understandings of biblical texts. \n  \nTo register\, click here
