Vaccination & reopening

As Victoria emerges out of lockdown and churches begin to reopen, the question of welcoming people who have not been double vaxxed to participate in worship is being carefully considered.

Tasmania is also navigating its way through similar questions.

In November, Moderator Denise Liersch held a forum titled Navigating The Road Ahead, which invited  members from both sides of the vaccination debate to speak freely and help forge a path ahead that considered all perspectives.

Denise told the forum there was deep theological, Biblical and ethical questions to consider so the Church remained a welcoming space for all members.

“(We need to consider) how our faith guides us, what Biblical stories might shape our approach and the theological questions involved,” she said.

“These are themes around our most vulnerable members, about personal rights and freedoms, (and the risk) of creating a two-tiered society of the vaccinated and unvaccinated.

“There are questions around rights and obligations and responsibilities and relationships, and of personal and religious freedoms and the freedom to create spaces that are open to the realities of other people’s lives and the impact upon them, and not just ourselves.”

On this page you will find a series of resources to help you and your congregation navigate your way ahead. These resources will be updated on a regular basis.

In the meantime, you can find additional resources on the Assembly website.
