Conference offers rich engagement
By Shenei Penaia
Attending Vaka2026 in Sydney as a delegate from the Vic/Tas Synod of Uniting Church in Australia, representing Sunshine Uniting Church and Prosper Youth, offered an important opportunity to engage with people from across Oceania committed to community organising and social impact.
I approached the conference with discernment, seeking to carefully observe, listen and understand the perspectives being shared. What became clear was the depth of authentic stories, lived experiences and meaningful dialogue present throughout the event.
Hearing directly from individuals actively engaged in communities across the Pacific region was particularly insightful. Their resilience, creativity, and collaboration illustrated that meaningful change arises from attentive listening, critical reflection and supporting one another rather, than relying solely on programs or titles. The sharing of lived experience underscored the value of grassroots knowledge and the impact of collective effort.
The conference emphasised, in ways both practical and inspiring, the importance of creating spaces where all voices are heard and respected. I found it essential to absorb the knowledge shared while discerning how to action it in ways that are rooted in scripture and aligned with my faith. This intentional approach ensures that any contribution I make is both thoughtful and grounded in principles that guide my work.
Vaka2026 reaffirmed that approaching experiences with openness, attentiveness and discernment can lead to unexpected insight and growth. I am grateful for the perspectives gained, the connections made, and the opportunity to witness the dedication and creativity of people committed to strengthening communities across Oceania.
