Formation and contextual learning

By Virginia Lavaki

Contextual learning trips are powerful experiences for younger generations because they move learning beyond books and classrooms into real life. Instead of only hearing about history, culture, faith or social issues, young people step into those realities by seeing, hearing and feeling them for themselves. This kind of learning stays with you in a deeper way because it connects knowledge with lived experience.

On a recent contextual learning trip to South Korea, I experienced this firsthand.

It wasn’t just about visiting new places or seeing different parts of the world. It was about understanding people, stories and the context behind them. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was learning about the legacy of Australian missionaries and the positive impact they had on local communities. Seeing schools, churches and communities that continue to thrive because of that history made the learning come alive in a powerful way.

We also visited historical and cultural sites, shared meals with local communities and engaged in honest conversations about faith, identity and leadership. These moments challenged my thinking and expanded my perspective. It reminded me that the world is much bigger than my own context, and there is always something to learn from others.

My favourite part of the trip was the opportunity to connect with people. Whether it was sitting in a classroom, sharing stories over food or participating in discussions, those human connections made everything meaningful.

It’s one thing to learn about a culture, but it’s another to experience the warmth, resilience and faith of the people themselves.

For younger generations, contextual learning trips are not just educational – they are transformational. They build empathy, broaden understanding and inspire a deeper sense of purpose. They help young people see their place in the world and encourage them to lead with awareness, humility and compassion.
