Churches to appear at Yoorrook

Moderator Rev David Fotheringham will represent the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania at the Yoorrook Justice Commission on May 1.

David will appear on a panel, alongside Victorian representatives of the Anglican and Catholic churches, as part of the Yoorrook “Land, Sky and Waters” hearings.

The Synod is committed to participating fully in the hearing as part of our commitment to walking together as First and Second Peoples, and in response to our commitment to reconciliation.

The hearing will be live streamed via the Yoorrook Justice Commission website.

The Yoorrook Justice Commission is the nation’s first formal truth-telling process and was established to examine injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria since colonisation.

First Peoples have been caring for country for thousands of generations.

The history of Europeans coming to Victoria 200 years ago and taking First Peoples’ land is one of wrongdoing and devastating loss, but this is also a story of First Peoples’ resistance, survival and ongoing connection to country.
