This exhibition presents a thoughtful exploration of the rich tradition of European sacred art, presenting the Madonna as a symbol of divine grace, wisdom, and compassion. Ursula Betka and Margaret Gibson, both esteemed iconographic artists, bring together Renaissance-inspired and Byzantine-influenced works, articulating the Madonna’s enduring spiritual resonance across different cultural and artistic traditions. Utilizing the time-honoured techniques of egg tempera painting and decorative gilding on wood panel, these sacred artworks invite contemplation of the inherent virtues embodied by the Madonna.

Dr. Ursula Betka presents her new book
Techniques of Painting and Gilding in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy.
Egg Tempera and Gold Leaf on Wood Panel.
Ursula Betka (Nov. 2024)
This book concentrates on a genre of sacred painting on wood panels that flourished in Catholic Europe from the late-medieval era. Both historical and contemporary methodologies of egg tempera painting and decorative gilding are explored, along with the theological and historical meanings of sacred art in the Italian tradition. Cennino Cennini’s seminal text, Il Libro dell’Arte, written in the late-fourteenth century, provides a starting point for an exploration of workshop techniques and materials seen through the lens of the author’s own artistic practice, teaching and academic research.
Thursday, Nov 28.
