DIYs:
The DIYs were developed over a period of time within the VicTas Synod. These offer a wealth of training materials for congregations and presbyteries at an introductory level. The ones that particularly relate to pastoral care include:

Lab 1: Calling and Caring
2024 – 22 August to 10 October – offered by the Presbytery of Port Phillip West, supported by the Synod. For more information contact Narelle Collas at [email protected].
Lab 1 was developed by Dr John Savage (American pastor, psychotherapist, spiritual director, coach) within the United Methodist Tradition. It offers individuals training in listening and other skills required for congregational pastoral care.
Assessment can be provided for those needing to use this training for Competency reasons (Ministry of Pastor and Ministry of Lay Preacher).

Pastoral Partner Program
Providing strategies and resource for effective pastoral care. Offered first half of 2025. Dates TBA.
Pastoral care is at the very heart of congregational life. This program seeks to establish an ethos of care among the congregation by establishing and maintaining a network of pastoral care. By identifying those with the gifts and willingness to use them for others, this program offers TRAINING and SUPPORT over a period of three years to equip carers for the task. Establish a team of partners who will ensure that everyone in the congregation will be connected and cared for. This Coordinators Manual is a complete resource for establishing and maintaining your pastoral care program.

Due to increased understanding around the need for intercultural awareness in ministry, this training offering will also include intercultural awareness in pastoral care. [Intercultural here referring to ethnicity, (dis)ability, gender and LGBTQI+, Neurodiversity, demographics, education, religious beliefs, etc.]

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
Offered through the John Paver Centre – Applications closed now for 2024
Uniting CPE – The John Paver Centre is one of 11 Supervised/Clinical Pastoral Education Centres in Victoria.
Traditionally associated with hospital settings, the Centre offers the same accreditation to people engaged in a range of community-based pastoral care roles, either as an employee or volunteer.
Participants are placed in diverse settings, such as prisons, forensic and community mental health, disability, schools, aged care, congregations, and hospitals.
Supervised/Clinical Pastoral Education (SPE/CPE) is a rigorous action-reflection process of education focused on enhancing pastoral identity, skills, and responsiveness. Feedback and learning is gained from small-group peer interaction and individual supervision.
The Centre is registered with the Association for Supervised and Clinical Pastoral Education in Victoria (ASACPEV) and its programs are run in conjunction with the equipping Leadership for Mission division of the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania.
Applications
Participants are required to supply evidence of an agency or organisation’s support for the duration of a placement. By negotiation, an on-site Administrative Supervisor will also be appointed.
Applications are welcome from students pursuing academic studies with the University of Divinity.

Queer Theology
Five-day intensive 27-28 June and 1-3 July 2024. In addition to the intensive classes, there are three scheduled online Zoom seminars for two hours on Tuesday evenings, 13, 20 and 27 August. There are prerequisites for this unit.
