Safe and inclusive environments

This month we wanted to highlight the third pillar in our Child Safe Policy: Safe and inclusive environments.

This is a big pillar that includes culturally safe environment for First Nations families, inclusive, sensitive and friendly space, safe physical space, as well as safe online spaces.

We want to ensure that First Nations families know as soon as they enter our spaces that they are welcome and safe.

It’s important to remember that there is no one way to look Aboriginal, so we can never assume if someone does or does not identify as being First Nations.

People may also choose not to identify until they are sure the place is safe to do so.

This pillar also covers online spaces which can include Facebook pages, live streaming services, online chats, gaming groups and anything else that is done digitally.

We need to remember these spaces can be treacherous for children and young people and prioritise ensuring they are just as safe as when we meet face to face.

For more details on ways to reflect on this pillar and tasks to undertake to ensure you are meeting the child safe standards, please refer to our implementation guide
